Biography

Travis James Higgins III, born on June 3, 1992, in Houston, Texas, is the eldest of three children to Rosezella and Travis James Higgins Jr. Travis began his pursuit of music at a very young age of 4 learning drums and percussion. Influenced by his grandmother, a saxophonist, pianist and music teacher, and his father, a trumpet and bass player, young Travis was engulfed in musical teachings and guidance.  In the six grade, Travis decided to transition from drums to trumpet, inspired by his father and this started the musical journey for the mastery of trumpet. While pursuing trumpet at school, he continued to play drums by way of his father bringing his son along to freelance at various churches throughout the greater Houston area, even fulfilling paid drum positions at the tender age of 10. Travis also picked up playing the piano which was influenced by his grandmother. However, Travis continued to only pursued trumpet scholastically, from middle school all throughout high school, without a single professional instructor for trumpet.

 

Travis earned his degree in Music Performance at Prairie View A&M University, for undergrad, a historical black university just north of Houston where both his father and his grandmother attended. It was there where Travis encountered his first trumpet instructor and mentor, Dr. Timmey Zachery. Under his guidance, Travis was able to develop his versatility, fundamentals, and performing in multiple groups such as the Prairie view A&M wind ensemble, jazz band, trumpet ensemble, and orchestra, simultaneously.

 

After graduating undergrad, Travis freelanced around the greater Houston area, marched with two Drum Corp International groups: the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2012, and the soloist and duettist with the Bluecoats in 2014. His resume has a multitude of performances including pop singer Solange Knowles, Young Artist Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Terra Haute Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, NewBurough Symphony Orchestra and Nashville contemporary music ensemble. He is also an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and Travis furthered his education and graduated from the Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music under retired Professor Edmund Cord with a Masters of Music and Performers Diploma. Currently, Travis is pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University Of Connecticut, an active freelancer around the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, and is an active duty member of the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corp. With the grace and guidance of God, Travis aspires to become a world renowned recording artist and performer on Trumpet, and to impact people through his music.
